Banned Book List
Under Florida law, books can be objected to if the district staff determines material is pornographic, describes sexual conduct, is not suited to student needs or is inappropriate for the grade level. This allows for a great deal of discretion on what our children can read. School board elections will determine who is sitting on these boards; making the decisions on what books are available in our school libraries.
Currently Florida has more banned books than any state in the county with over 2,000 different books banned. Depending on what area of Florida you live in, your children will have more or less restrictions in the books they can read. These books have been pulled from all SJC School District libraries. We have not been able to find a single list of banned/restricted books that is published on thedistrict website. They used to publish a list; but as far as we know, they no longer do this. (This information is compiled from news articles, school board meeting notes, and other sources.)
